Anton Ferdinand recalls ‘unplayable’ Carlos Tevez and dancing with fans as West Ham sealed Premier League great escape by beating Manchester United on final day of 2006/07 season

West Ham pulled off a memorable Premier League great escape by winning 1-0 at Manchester United on the final day of the 2006/07 season.

Anton Ferdinand played 34 times in that dramatic campaign as West Ham looked dead and buried following a 4-3 defeat to Tottenham, which left them 10 points from safety with nine games to go.

However, an incredible seven wins from their remaining nine matches, which included wins over Arsenal, Chelsea and United, preserved West Ham’s top-flight status.

Carlos Tevez’s goal was enough to beat the already-crowned champions at Old Trafford as Ferdinand recalled his memories of the ‘fantastic’ day.

He told talkSPORT: “We had to win to stay up and going to Old Trafford and getting that result… Tevez on the day was unplayable.

“He signed for Man United that summer, that’s how good he was. It was fantastic.

“Being a West Ham fan and being part of a team that was dead and buried – we were in the bottom three after Christmas.

“Normally they say when you’re in the bottom three after Christmas, the likelihood is you’re not coming out, especially the bottom two. We were in the bottom two around that time.

“We galvanised and came together and that final day celebrating with the fans in the corner, 45 minutes to an hour I was still out there.

“I was all about the celebrating back then, especially with the fans, having a little dance and sing-song with the fans.”
