Rafael Nadal, the top seed and defending champion of the Australian Open, has been defeated in the second round by American player Mackenzie McDonald. Nadal took a medical timeout during the match and was unable to continue due to an injury. Despite his efforts, he was unable to finish the match. This result ends Nadal’s defense of his title. Rafael Nadal dropped the opening set of the match against Mackenzie McDonald due to a high level of play from McDonald and some unforced errors from Nadal. Nadal did show signs of improvement in the second set, but was forced to retire from the match after experiencing pain in his left hip. He called for the trainer at 3-5 in the second set, and left the court for treatment. LeBron James became the second NBA player in history to pass 38,000 career points during a game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers. He passed the milestone with a mid-range jumper in the first quarter and went on to score 35 points. James is now 363 points away from tying Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time record. Despite the personal accolade, James was frustrated as the Lakers lost the game 113-112, and it was their third straight defeat.
