They won for the first time in eight league matches on Boxing Day with a 3-1 defeat of Chelsea, but Arteta remains keen on adding to his squad in the January transfer window.

The Sun claim Jordan is a January target for Arsenal, with the north London club tracking him for the past three years.

The midfielder has a £55m release clause in his contract, but Sevilla would be willing to listen to offers of around £32m, the report adds.

It is also claimed that Jordan’s leadership skills have caught Arteta’s eye.

Jordan, 26, helped Sevilla win the Europa League in his debut season with the club having joined from Eibar in 2019.

Arsenal have had midfield troubles this season with injury-hit £45m summer signing Thomas Partey making just four Premier League starts, while Dani Ceballos, on loan from Real Madrid, has struggled for form.

Granit Xhaka has also blown hot and cold as he was sent off in a 1-0 home defeat to Burnley before scoring a superb free-kick against Chelsea.

Earlier this month, Arsenal legend David Seaman insisted his former club need to back Arteta in the January transfer window.

He told talkSPORT: “I see him on the sidelines, I see him speaking and I know people at the training ground and they tell me his coaching techniques are fantastic.

“A lot of that team was under Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery. So he hasn’t got his own team yet.

“The club need to back him on that because we can all see we still need players.

“We’ve got Gabriel, okay he was stupid [by getting sent off in a 1-1 draw with Southampton] but he looked uncomfortable all game if I’m honest.

“Then we got Partey and we need to add to that.”
