A football fan and NHS worker broke down in tears on talkSPORT as he emotionally pleaded for footballers to obey coronavirus lockdown rules.

Several stories broke over the weekend about footballers who ignored and broke COVID-19 regulations over the Christmas and New Year period, and flaunted it on social media.

Tottenham and West Ham condemned the actions of a number of their players after Giovani Lo Celso, Erik Lamela, Sergio Reguilon and Manuel Lanzini were pictured spending Christmas together with their families.

Despite London being placed in tier 4, meaning households were not allowed to mix over the festive break, pictures shared on Instagram showed the Spurs and Hammers stars in a group with eleven other adults, two children and a baby all staying in one house.

Manchester City also expressed their ‘disappointment’ after news emerged that defender Benjamin Mendy broke the rules by hosting a New Year’s Eve party with friends at his home.

And although Pep Guardiola defended his player, Brighton supporter and NHS worker John joined talkSPORT to condemn the footballers and send a powerful message to start abiding by the rules.

On Sunday, the UK recorded more than 50,000 new confirmed COVID-19 cases for the sixth day in a row.

There were also an additional 454 deaths recorded on the same day, meaning the toll of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK is now above 75,000.

“I work for the NHS in Brighton hospital and I’ve seen people with COVID, it’s not nice, it’s not nice at all,” John told talkSPORT host Jim White.

“Footballers are obviously very rich people, but it can affect anybody, it doesn’t matter whether you’re poor, you can get it.

“These people unfortunately do think they’re immune to it… let them come to work in a ward for one day, let them see… sorry…

“Let them see the people that are dying from this virus, and us who are having to fight to keep it going – they are the people who should be going to these places.

“If they did for one day, they won’t ever do it [break the rules] again, I can assure you.

“I’m sorry to get a bit emotional but people are dying because of these actions, they need to stop and they need to realise they can get it, it doesn’t matter whether you’re rich or not, if you’re a footballer or a normal person on the street, you can get it.

“And I can assure you, I’ve been on the frontline and I’ve seen it, it’s not a pleasant sight and it does you no good at all.”

talkSPORT hosts White, Simon Jordan and Danny Murphy were then joined on the show by Matt the Everton supporter, who believes there should be serious punishments in place for players who are found guilty of ignoring the rules.

And these punishments should include a TEN-GAME ban for serial offenders!

“I’m disgusted by the behaviour of these players,” he said.

“There are so many people that are sacrificing so much to try to help… I honestly believe the recalcitrant and arrogant attitude of the footballers is diabolical.

“There should be punishment both at a personal level and at club level.

Simon Jordan says Premier League clubs should be fined a million pounds every time their players are caught breaking lockdown rules as many are caught flouting rules over Christmas and New Year

“If a player is caught once, it should be a three-game ban, £100,000 fine for the player and the club is fined £1million.

“If you do it again, five-game ban, £500,000 fine and the club is fined £2m.

“If you do it a third time it should be a ten-game ban – let’s hit them hard – fine them £1m and the club £10m.

“It might sound extreme, but we’re in extreme conditions and until these idiot footballers who think they are above normal people realise that, then these measures need to be brought in, they need to be hit as hard as possible.

“Especially when you look at the punishment dished out for lesser crimes.”
