Chelsea secured the first win of the Thomas Tuchel era on Sunday afternoon as they controlled proceedings against Burnley and left Stamford Bridge with a 2-0 win.

Cesar Azpilicueta netted the opening goal of Tuchel’s reign when he finished off a fine team move with a precise strike in the first half, before Marcos Alonso marked his return to the starting line-up with a second half stunner to wrap up the three points.

Chelsea really should have scored three or four more times against the Clarets as well, with numerous chances created but Timo Werner, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic all missing gilt-edged opportunities and the excellent Callum Hudson-Odoi hitting the post.

Furthermore, the visitors managed just one shot all game and Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy did not have a single save to make.

This made it two successive clean sheets for Chelsea as they drew 0-0 with Wolves in Tuchel’s midweek debut, and following up that draw with such a commanding defeat of Burnley is sure to send a statement of Tuchel’s intent.

And West Ham legend Alvin Martin sent out a warning to Chelsea’s Premier League rivals as he raved about the Blues during talkSPORT’s LIVE commentary of the Stamford Bridge clash.

“Don’t underestimate the completeness of this performance,” said Martin.

Mario Melchiot backs Frank Lampard to bounce back from Chelsea sacking in the same way he bounced back from disappointment in his playing career

“We’ve mentioned a few times the press, we’ve mentioned when they are under pressure they know how to defend…

“And the creativity and risk-taking in the final third; there is a really fine line between being reckless but also knowing you have to take a risk.

“They’ve got all those things right, and what we’ve seen is a performance that they’ve grown as a team before our very eyes.

“It’s really impressive.”
