Antonio Rudiger has branded rumours that he played a key role in Frank Lampard’s sacking at Chelsea as ‘nonsense.’

Reports circulated that the 27-year-old was at the heart of the problems that lost Frank Lampard his job, claims he vehemently denies.

Allegations were made in the media that he had a furious training ground bust-up with Cezar Azpilicueta and also went directly to the board to discuss unrest in the squad.

The Germany international was heavily linked with the Stamford Bridge exit door in the summer after falling out of favour under his former boss.

He has since started both of Thomas Tuchel’s first games in charge, though he was brought back into the first team before Lampard was dismissed.

And the defender has now rubbished the rumours he played a part in Lampard’s dismissal, insisting he is thankful for the trust Lampard showed in him towards the end of his tenure.

“There have been so many nonsense rumours around about me since last week,” Rudiger told The Athletic. “I’ve never talked with the board about the situation of the coach or on any other topics.

“Frank Lampard trusted in my abilities after Christmas in a very difficult situation and I was thankful for this. It was also the main reason I told my representatives not to look for a possible winter move anymore.

“Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for our team to turn things around for the coach. We always wanted the best for the manager and for the club.”

Chelsea are back in action on Thursday evening as they take on London rivals Tottenham in a crunch showdown.
