Edinson Cavani should be starting as the main striker for Manchester United, Mark Hughes told talkSPORT.

The Uruguay international joined the Red Devils on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in October.

The 33-year-old came was prolific with PSG finishing as their record goalscorer and has shown glimpses of what made him such a feared marksman.

Cavani has netted four times in 13 Premier League appearances – but just four of those appearances have been starts.

Anthony Martial has often been used as the central striker playing 16 times in the Premier League, including 14 starts, but has just two goals.

Man United legend Hughes believes Cavani should get the nod over anyone else.

He told talkSPORT Breakfast: “I think he’s an outstanding centre-forward. He plays the role as I’m imagining myself.

“He’s always looking to be a physical presence up there, he’s a big guy and got pace.

“They key thing for me, which is maybe different to what Greenwood and Rashford are able to offer at this time, is his movement in the box.

“He just moves like a striker should do in the box and gets across people, gets across the front post, is physical, he’ll put his head in there.

“If he was five years younger, for some reason he doesn’t play week in week out, maybe he doesn’t have the capacity any more.

“As a main striker, he would be the one I’d pick.”

Anthony Martial has struggled this season

Martial has come in for plenty criticism this season for his performances in a United shirt and selection will be a tough choice for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in their next match against Arsenal – with commentary of the match live on talkSPORT.

Former Manchester City and England winger Trevor Sinclair bemoaned the 25-year-old’s performance in United’s 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United and questioned his desire to play football.

“I’m looking at what Anthony Martial has brought to the table,” said Sinclair during talkSPORT’s live commentary of the Old Trafford clash. “Has he tried any take-ons today?

“As a winger or number nine you’ve got to have a go and try and express yourself.

“He doesn’t even look like he enjoys football!”
