Ralph Hasenhuttl appeared to be crying tears of joy as Southampton secured a momentous 1-0 victory over champions Liverpool on Monday night.

The Saints boss dropped to his knees as the full-time whistle blew, seemingly overcome with emotion as his side pulled off arguably the greatest win since he arrived in 2018.

A clever lob from former Liverpool striker Danny Ings in just the second minute of the game proved to be enough as some heroic Southampton defending kept the visitors at bay.

Hasenhuttl has been compared to Klopp for his eccentric managerial style, wearing his heart on his sleeve at all times, and the Austrian has described his counterpart as a role model in the past.

For the man once called the ‘Alpine Klopp’, victory over the Liverpool manager must’ve felt pretty special.

And speaking after the match, Klopp was keen to accept responsibility for the defeat and insist Hasenhuttl’s side deserved the victory.

“Our decision making was not good,” the Liverpool boss told his post-match press conference.

“I heard one second ago we had one shot on target. Our fault, my responsibility and that is it.

“Of course we worry, these are our problems. But football problems you solve with football.

“We know the situation, we are not silly. We have to show a reaction, 100 per cent.

“Southampton deserved it, they ran their socks off. They did really well, that is clear. I am mostly concerned by our game though and I didn’t like it too much.”
