Before Nanu had even hit the deck, players from both teams began to beckon for emergency assistance upon hearing the impact, with an ambulance brought straight to the pitch.

For ten minutes, the defender lay prone on the pitch with medics scared to move him and the concern was etched on the faces of every player.

Thankfully, he was stretchered off of the field of play and taken to a nearby hospital after fears about a potentially life-threatening neck injury were allayed.

Pepe said after the game: “I wish our colleague Nanu a speedy recovery.

“The doctors in the ambulance told me that he did well, that he was already conscious”

Nanu was making his eighth league appearance of what has been a breakthrough season in north-west Portugal.

The former Benfica youth prospect joined the club from Maritimo last year and has worked his way into Sergio Conceicao’s first-team.

The defending champions have struggled to keep pace with Sporting Lisbon at the top of the table and the latest stalemate was another blow to their title hopes.
