Paris Saint-Germain have finally confirmed the sacking of Thomas Tuchel, with Mauricio Pochettino the leading contender to succeed him at the French club.

The news broke on Christmas Eve that Tuchel was to lose his job, but it has taken until December 29 for PSG to formally make the announcement of his departure.

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Tuchel took over at PSG in the summer of 2018 and guided them to successive Ligue 1 titles.

They won the domestic quadruple in his second season at the club and reached the Champions League final for the first ever time earlier this year.

They currently sit third in the table, one point behind leaders Lyon following last week’s 4-0 home win against Strasbourg.

A PSG statement read: “After an in-depth analysis of its sporting situation, Paris Saint-Germain decided to terminate Thomas Tuchel’s contract.

“Thomas Tuchel became PSG coach in July 2018, going on to manage the capital club 127 times in all competitions, with 95 wins, 12 draws and 20 defeats (342 goals scored, 109 conceded).

“His trophy haul covers two Ligue 1 titles in 2019 and 2020, the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue in 2020, two Trophées de Champions in 2018 and 2019 as well as leading Paris Saint-Germain to the first Champions League final in the club’s history last August.”

Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: “I would like to thank Thomas Tuchel and his staff for all they have contributed to the club.

“Thomas has put a lot of energy and passion into the job, and we will of course remember the good moments we shared together. I wish him all the best for the future.”

PSG are expected to imminently confirm the appointment of Pochettino now Tuchel has formally left.

Pochettinho has been out of work for over a year since being sacked by Tottenham last November, to be replaced in north London by Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine has been linked with a host of clubs in the months since – including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona – but reports claim he has already agreed a deal with PSG to take charge at the Parc des Princes.

Pochettino spent two years playing in Paris at the start of the century, making nearly 95 appearances and winning the 2001 Intertoto Cup.
