Frank Lampard told Chelsea forward Timo Werner to keep his head up as his disastrous form in front of goal continued in the FA Cup.

Werner missed a late penalty against Luton after he was brought down in the box and his luck seems to be out at the moment.

Werner’s frustrations were clear to see

The German has scored just one goal in his last 16 Chelsea games and his confidence appears to be low.

When asked what he told Werner, Lampard told talkSPORT: “To keep his head up. It’s clear the goals haven’t been going in for him. We’ve been getting him in front of goal a lot but there are periods in your career and life where it doesn’t quite go for you and maybe the penalty is the pinnacle of that.

“Everything else he gave in the game. He was despondent at the end but I told him to keep his head up for those last few minutes because he showed a lot of intention, running in behind, getting in areas and giving a threat.

“Teams will be scared of Timo Werner when they are playing and he’s playing on your shoulder and wants to run in behind because we’ve seen him do it.

“That’s what has made him the player that we brought to the club.

“It’s my job to lift his head up, and his teammates to support him. We’ve all been there. I’ve missed plenty of penalties in my career and the important thing is to bounce back.”

It was a job well done for Lampard and his Chelsea team in the end with Tammy Abraham scoring three times in the 3-1 win over Luton.

The Blues boss was pleased with his side’s overall performance and that of his striker.

He added: “Everything I wanted barring more goals and one sloppy giveaway goal. They had another chance but apart from that the game was ours, we dominated it.

“Luton was going to be a difficult game today but our collective performances in it were really good.

“He (Abraham) showed a lot in his game today on and off the ball. Running off the ball, short game, linking up play, three goals. It’s really good for him.

“He’s been good this season and I’ve got options up front. Oli (Giroud)  when he’s played has been good in his own way and at the end of the day if we are going to get the points in the league we want we need strikers and attacking players scoring goals.

“That’s what Chelsea is about and the pressure is there to fill your boots when your day is good.”

Kepa Arrizabalaga started in goal but he had a moment to forget when he was beaten at close range when he should have done better.

But he went on to make an important save later on in the game when the score was 2-1 and Lampard was still pleased overall with his goalkeeper.

He said: “We obviously had a sloppy moment and they got their goal but other than that everything was spot on for me. I was very happy at half-time.

“At 2-1 you give them a lifeline in the game because we don’t take our chances then they get a chance and you wonder what might be.

“You rely on your goalkeeper to make a great save and I’m really pleased for Kepa.”
