It’s five defeats in six Premier League games for Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham side.

Their season is fraying at the seams and a comfortable Europa League Round of 32 win over Wolfsberger can’t mask it’s threatening to implode domestically in N17.

The European adventures have given the club, and it’s suffering supporters some hope and belief though.

Fringe stars Dele Alli and Gareth Bale, who appeared to have been sidelined totally by Mourinho, have sprung to life.

The former thrilled on Wednesday night with a stunning overhead kick goal and two assists, while his Welsh teammate now has two goals and two assists in three games.

Have they arrived in time to save a Spurs season in danger of slipping from title tilt to mid-table mediocrity, though?

Manager Mourinho, has insisted he’s used to the stress and strain he’s currently under, with Julian Nagelsmann linked with replacing him in the summer.

“The problem is if you don’t have pressure,” he said. “I felt in trouble when I was at home and did not have pressure for a few months.

“That’s the problem. It comes like oxygen, it is our life, I don’t think there is any coach in the world without objectives or any kind of pressure. You just get used to it and also used to the way the press is at the time, you just have to adapt to it.”

Eric Dier, meanwhile, has praised teammate Alli for his showing against Wolfsberger and is backing him to continue the resurgence.

“Dele put in a fantastic performance, I thought he was really good in the first leg as well,” he said.

“[This time] he got the goal and the two assists which is great for him and a reminder to everyone of his quality because in football people have very short memories and they can forget quite quickly so it is good for him to remind them and hopefully he can push on.”

Spurs have looked pedestrian in attacking situations recently but Dier feels Alli’s unpredictable movement can be a real positive.

“I have always said that is one of his greatest qualities, that he can pop up when you least expect it,” said Dier.

“He arrives in the right situations, arriving in the box, his timing with his defensive duties and pressing, second balls, he has great football intelligence and maturity and I always thought that was one of his greatest qualities.”

Tottenham team news

Giovani Lo Celso has returned to training but is still absent, while Serge Aurier is edging closer to a return to the starting XI.

Mourinho has no new injury worries but performances from some of his squad players will have given him a selection headache.

Bale and Alli should come in for Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela given their recent exploits, while Japhet Tanganga could start again at right-back ahead of Matt Doherty, if Aurier isn’t deemed fit enough.

Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier could get the nod in defence against a tough Burnley frontline, while Sergio Reguilon and Hugo Lloris will also come back in, along with Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.
