Gareth Bale’s return to Tottenham has not gone to plan and ex-Spurs duo Harry Redknapp and Jamie O’Hara don’t think Jose Mourinho is doing the right things to get the best out of him.

Bale rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan last summer after falling out of favour with Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.

Fans welcomed back with delight their hero, who left to join the Spanish giants in 2013 and enjoyed so much success domestically and on the European stage.

The 31-year-old has largely been ineffective since returning to north London, accruing just 231 minutes of Premier League action in six total appearances. He has also scored only once in that time.

He started against Brighton on Sunday, with manager Mourinho needing him to step up in the absence of Harry Kane.

But Bale barely had an impact on the game, which Tottenham went on to lose 1-0.

Former Spurs manager Redknapp, who helped develop Bale during his first spell in north London, urged Mourinho to give the Welshman a run in the side.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, Redknapp said: “People say to me he looks like he’s not interested or he doesn’t care, and I’ve heard all this.

“If he didn’t care then he would have stayed at Real Madrid earning the same money; he’s come here because he wants to play and prove himself again!

“He’s not the most confident boy in the world, even though he was up there for me in the top five players in the world when he was at Tottenham first and then Real Madrid.

“You’ve got to make him feel like he’s the main man and give him confidence. Surely, you’ve got to find a way and it’s the manager’s job to unlock that talent and get him going again.

“I’m sure it’s in there and it needs bringing out now. He doesn’t need to be bringing him on, taking him off and little cameos here and there.

“Let him play and give him a run.”

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara played with Bale at Tottenham and urged his old teammate to give it his all for the remainder of his loan spell.

“I don’t think Jose Mourinho is the right manager for Gareth Bale, if I’m honest,” added O’Hara on talkSPORT. “Gareth needs to be loved.

“I remember playing with him, and Harry Redknapp got the best out of him; I think he’s the perfect manager for Gareth Bale right now.

“He needs someone to put their arm around him and give him the confidence to go out there and play with freedom.

“Mourinho’s standards of what he expects from Bale or how he wants him to play, you’re just seeing the worst of Gareth Bale, the complete worst.

“I do feel for him a little bit, but I also think, ‘come on Gareth’.

“I’ve played with him and he’s always had this inner confidence and belief, almost an arrogance. The best players have this arrogance about them, and he had that, and that’s why he played at such a high level and won so many trophies

“I’m watching him now and he looks a complete shadow of himself.

“Gareth Bale looks like a player who has absolutely no confidence in his body.

“It’s like he’s so scared of getting injured that he’s almost embarrassing himself when he plays.

“You’ve just got to go out there and think, ‘you know what, if I get injured and I break down, I break down; but at least I’m giving it 100 per cent’.

“Because what he’s giving at the moment, he might as well not play.”
