Ilkay Gundogan’s remarkable scoring run continued as the German midfielder grabbed a brilliant second-half brace with Man City sealing a record-breaking 16th straight win by beating Tottenham 3-0 on Saturday.
Gundogan has now registered 11 goals in his last 12 Premier League games and played a starring role for Pep Guardiola’s men at the Etihad who extended their lead at the top to seven points.
Spurs went close to taking the lead after 15 minutes when Harry Kane curled a free-kick against the post.
City made the most of that reprieve and went ahead with a penalty in the 23rd minute after Ilkay Gundogan was brought down by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Gundogan, who missed a spot-kick last week, this time deferred to Rodri and the Spaniard’s low shot just crept past the dive of Hugo Lloris.
The 30-year-old doubled City’s lead early in the second half. Sterling was heavily involved after a weaving run into the box and the German fired a shot inside Lloris’ near post.
It was a slick finish although Lloris may feel he should have done better – a view which Clive Allen and Trevor Sinclair – talkSPORT’s two co-commentators on the game – agreed with.
“The drive from eight yards out went under Hugo Lloris, but he should be far stronger and keep that out,” ex-Spurs striker Clive Allen said.
When quizzed by Clive Tyldesley on whether it was an error from Lloris, Sinclair responded: “I think so.
“It was a weak right hand at his near post try and get the ball out. It’s on target that’s the best you can call it – Hugo Lloris wasn’t good enough again.”
City claimed a remarkable third goal just after the hour.
Ederson picked out Gundogan with a long ball over the top and the German controlled brilliantly to both wrong-foot Davinson Sanchez and create a shooting chance from where he slipped the ball past Lloris.
The result left Spurs sitting eighth in the table while City are now seven points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand over their nearest rivals Leicester.
