Italy beat Spain on penalties to reach the Euro 2020 final after a 1-1 draw at Wembley. Federico Chiesa and Jorginho scored for Italy who will face either England or Denmark in the final. Alvaro Morata’s penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois put Spain ahead with 10 minutes to go. But Dani Olmo equalised from the spot to send Italy through.
Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain missed a penalty in the shootout as Italy beat Spain to reach the Euro final. The Juventus forward’s penalty miss was enough to send Italy through to the final for the first time in their history. Roberto Mancini’s side will face holders Argentina in the final on Sunday.
However, this was the toughest they have had to work, and they only managed one shot between Morata’s equaliser and the shootout.
It is an especially sad end to the Euros for Morata. He has wasted numerous chances during the tournament – with his family having to endure threats from fans – and his equaliser looked set to change the narrative before he failed from the spot.
MANCINI’S MACHINE KEEPS ON GOING
Italy manager Roberto Mancini has led his team to their first major final since taking over from Cesare Prandelli. The Azzurri beat Belgium 2-1 in the semi-finals of the Under- World Cup in Belo Horizonte on Saturday. They will face Argentina in the final, with the winner going through to the last four.
Italy beat Spain 2-1 to reach the final of the European Under- Championship. The Azzurri took a surprise lead from Chiesa before Alvaro Morata equalised for Spain. Jorginho’s penalty was saved by Unai Simon but they went on to win the game -2. They will face Germany in the final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
SPAIN’S WASTEFULNESS CATCHES UP WITH THEM
Spain go home as the top scorers at Euro 2020 with 13 goals from two games. Luis Enrique’s side had 16 shots to Italy’s seven but managed only one more effort on target than their opponents at Wembley. The summer is not over for six of them, however, with Olmo, Simon, Oyarzabal, Pau Torres, Eric Garcia and Pedri in Spain’s Olympic football squad.
