Jose Mourinho sent a message to Brentford fans following Tottenham’s Carabao Cup triumph over them: See you in the Premier League.
Spurs booked their place in the final of the competition with a largely comfortable 2-0 victory over the Bees thanks to goals from Moussa Sissoko and Heung-min Son.
It was a cup tie Mourinho’s men mostly controlled but there were one or two hairy moments for them.
Ivan Toney thought he’d levelled for the Championship side on 63 minutes but VAR came to the rescue for Spurs with replays appearing to show the striker in an offside position just before he nodded the ball home.
Mourinho is in no doubt his side deserve to be in the final – where Manchester United or Manchester City await – but believes Spurs will have to get used to playing Thomas Frank’s side in the near future.
He told Sky Sports: “The game was always under control. They had the offside goal… and they had one bit of pressure on the right side where Davinson Sanchez was clever not to touch the guy [Bryan Mbuemo] and the guy was clean not to do the [diving motion], which is what some other guys do.
“We didn’t play brilliantly. I think we have to do better with the ball. We sometimes made wrong decisions, sometimes one more touch, sometimes the control not with that soft control that allows you to play fast.
“The game was always under control against a team that probably are coming here next year to play in the Premier League.”
One of the tie’s other main talking points came a few minutes before the end, with Josh Dasilva receiving a red card for a wild tackle on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Hojbjerg sported a gruesome scar on his leg afterwards but Mourinho assured Spurs fans that their shouldn’t be any lasting damage for the midfielder.
Mourinho added: “Bleeding but I believe that’s going to be fine. He was bleeding at the top of the shin pads because the tackle was nasty.
“But Dasilva’s a young guy, a good player. That can happen, nothing against that. That’s football.”
