Jurgen Klopp was left perplexed as Liverpool were beaten by Burnley in a match that seemed ‘impossible to lose’ in his eyes.

Liverpool’s 68-match unbeaten run at home in the Premier League was surprisingly ended by the Clarets, with Ashley Barnes’ late penalty all that separated the two sides.

But more importantly, it means the Reds’ hopes of retaining the title have taken a huge knock as they currently sit six points behind leaders Manchester United.

Klopp’s side had a five-point cushion when they beat Crystal Palace 7-0 on December 19 but no win in their five league matches since has seen them slip down to fourth.

The team looks a shadow of the side that romped to the title last season and lifted the Champions League in the 2018/19 campaign.

However, Klopp shouldered all the responsibility for their latest setback, insisting it was his fault Burnley got the better of them.

But Klopp refused to blame the players for the defeat

He told Sky Sports: “We lost a game which I think was actually impossible to lose but we did.

“And that’s my fault because my job is to make sure that the boys have the right feelings, the right amount of confidence… and that obviously didn’t work out.

“We created some situations but in the final moment we did not make the right decision and that’s the problem.

“It’s always my fault. The things that don’t work are my fault, the things that work are a credit to the players… if I make clear which movements make sense and we don’t do them, I need to make it clearer.

“I can’t believe we lost it but it’s the truth and we have to accept that.”
