Jurgen Klopp’s 34-man squad for pre-season training in Austria includes Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and new signing Ibrahima Konate. The likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana, and Raheem Sterling have all been absent from the Reds’ first-team squad so far this season. Jurgen Kolasinac has returned to Liverpool after spending the last three seasons out on loan at Borussia Dortmund. The German goalkeeper has not played for the Reds since.
Loris Karius has not played for Liverpool since August 2018. The German goalkeeper came on as a second-half substitute in a pre-season friendly against Torino at Anfield. His last competitive appearance for the Reds is the one that, sadly, will define his time on Merseyside. Nobody, least of all Karius, will forget the 2018 Champions League final when his second-half errors cost Liverpool dear as they slid to defeat against Real Madrid.

A few weeks later, Liverpool had their new No.1, Alisson Becker, joining from Roma in what was at the time a world-record transfer for a goalkeeper.
Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has signed a new deal with Besiktas. The German was released by the Reds after failing to win over his critics at the end of last season. His manager, Senol Gunes, publicly criticized him after one mistake against Konyaspor. He is expected to return to the club in the summer and could play in the Europa League final.
“It has been like that since the beginning. He does not really feel a part of the team.
“[HE] IS TALENTED BUT IT HASN’T WORKED OUT AND WE HAVE A PROBLEM. LET ME PUT IT THIS WAY, IF I STILL HAD TOLGA [ZENGIN, THE VETERAN GOALKEEPER] AVAILABLE, I WOULD PLAY HIM.”
Loris Karius terminated his deal with the German side of Union Berlin in May 2020. That was around the same time he sought legal action against Besiktas over unpaid wages. Karius spent pre-season with Liverpool last August but failed to make an impression on the Reds. He joined Union Berlin on loan in September but made only five appearances for the Bundesliga outfit.
Karius is part of a five-man ‘goalkeepers’ union at Liverpool, alongside Caoimhin Kelleher, Adrian, Marcelo Pitaluga, and Harvey Davies. He has entered the final year of his contract, and his representatives are working to find him a new club, either on loan or, preferably, on a permanent basis. The Reds are yet to receive any official approaches, though they are aware of potential interest in France, Germany, and Russia.
