Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool is the transfer all Reds fans are dreaming of, but club legend John Barnes is slightly more sceptical.
The France striker is one of the world’s best players but rumours linking him with the Premier League champions really caught fire last season when he spoke of his admiration for Liverpool.
After Liverpool’s win over Manchester United on January 19 last year, Mbappe said: “What Liverpool do in this moment is amazing.
“They’re like a machine, they’ve found a rhythm and are like ‘we play again, we play again’.
“Now the problem is that everybody watches Liverpool, and everybody watches what we can do against them, so now they have to show they are strong again but it’s a very good team with a very good manager.”
These quotes sparked #Mbappe2020 trends on social media, however, that never materialised with the 22-year-old staying at Paris Saint-Germain.
His Parc des Princes contract expires in June 2022, so of course Kopites have got #Mbappe2021 trending despite rumoured interest from Real Madrid also.
Reds legend Barnes agrees Mbappe would be a good signing but insists he’s not the answer to their problems right now with Liverpool’s defensive shortage beginning to take its toll on their form.
Barnes told Bonus Code Bets: “Mbappe is a fantastic player but forward areas are not a position that Liverpool need strengthening in, but if he can play centre-back they should get him in January!
“If Liverpool tail away and finish lower down the table, he won’t come to Liverpool – so they should worry about this season. If there is a possibility of getting him in January then you could go and get him, but there isn’t.
“Short-term, Mbappe is not Liverpool’s answer. Liverpool are strong in attacking positions and have huge depth in midfield, but the centre-back position is the one that really needs addressing.”
Asked whether Mbappe’s PSG teammate Neymar would be a good fit, Barnes was in no doubt that Liverpool should not consider signing the 28-year-old Brazilian.
He added: “What Liverpool want are hungry players, regardless of whether they are top players or not – the success of the club is the most important thing.
“If someone comes in and upsets the apple cart and wants to be more important than anybody else – like Neymar for example, who is one of the best players in the world but who wouldn’t suit Liverpool – it could destabilise the group’s respect and harmony.
“Who would have thought that Jordan Henderson or Sadio Mane would be a top player? You have to sign the right character of player that suits the team.
“Signing the best players works at teams like Real Madrid where they like these Galaticos that are above other teammates, but for Liverpool this would not work, they’re more cautious.”
