Ally McCoist can’t believe people are talking about Kylian Mbappe overtaking Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the best footballer in the world.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker ensured his name was in the headlines this week with a fantastic hat-trick against Barcelona, overshadowing Messi at Camp Nou where the 33-year-old is viewed as a God.

However, Mbappe and Erling Haaland – who scored two goals and grabbed an assist in Borussia Dortmund’s win over Sevilla – have been crowned the ‘new Messi and Ronaldo’.

Ronaldo, 36, also struggled as Juventus were beaten by Porto in their last-16 clash, and it’s fair to say both are approaching the twilight of their careers.

McCoist, though full of praise for Mbappe, is stunned he is being discussed in the same breath as Messi, and insists he has ‘a long way to go’ to be accurately compared with the Argentine maestro.

“Mbappe is fantastic, he is something else,” the former Rangers and Scotland striker told the talkSPORT Breakfast.

“For Paris Saint-Germain and the France national side he is different class, absolutely a different level. He’s one of the quickest I’ve seen in a very long time, boy can he finish and he’s only going to get better.

“But… I still think it’s early to say that’s him taking over the mantle of Ronaldo and Messi.

“He might never do it, because these two have been out of this world in terms of their performances and what they’ve achieved.

“So is he good? Yes. Will he get better? Yes.

“But he’s still got a long way to go before he can even be compared to Ronaldo and Messi.”

An outraged Ally, whose own goal scoring career saw him win the European Golden Shoe, continued: “I do not think for a minute that Mbappe can do things with a ball that Messi can do.

Andros Townsend, Laura Woods and Ally McCoist debate who the best players in the world right now are – no Messi or Ronaldo?

“Messi is one of the greatest players who has ever lived on this Earth!

“Mbappe is an excellent young player who will go on to be fantastic, but there’s a difference.

“If someone would tell me Mbappe is going to outshine Messi as a football player, I would be staggered.

“He’ll go on to have a great career and he’ll be an absolutely top player, but are we writing Messi off?

“This is annoying me! Messi is one of the best players this planet has ever seen!

“What we’re dealing with is a young man who had a brilliant game at the Nou Camp, scored a hat-trick and has a wonderful future.

“But come on, everybody calm down and have a wee think about Messi, what he’s achieved, the player he is and the talent we will never, ever, ever forget.”
