Dejan Lovren believes Liverpool miss him more than he misses them in light of the Reds’ injury crisis at centre-back.

The Croatia defender, 31, left Anfield for Zenit Saint Petersburg last summer after falling out of favour under Jurgen Klopp.

The emergence of Joe Gomez and form of Joel Matip meant Lovren was surplus to requirements for the champions – but that wouldn’t be the case this season.

Long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Gomez, as well as ongoing fitness issues for Matip, have seen Fabinho and Jordan Henderson converted into emergency centre-backs.

Nevertheless, when asked about the prospect of more regular game time at Liverpool had he stayed, Lovren insists he has no regrets.

In an interview with Zenit, the 31-year-old said: “I never regret anything and this is a feeling I don’t allow in my head.

“I made the decision to leave Liverpool. I wasn’t feeling happy there towards the end, because I wasn’t playing.

“I am happy that I decided to come here and I think they miss me more than I miss them.

“Jurgen Klopp knows that, we sometimes chat and he once wrote to me that he misses me. I did not answer that.”

Lovren has actually been linked with a short-term loan move back to Liverpool in light of their lack of numbers in defence.

The 31-year-old was never rated among the Premier League’s best centre-backs during his time on Merseyside, however he was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League triumph.

He also helped Croatia reach the World Cup final in 2018.
