Liverpool have been told to park any interest in Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland and sign Raphael Varane as a matter of priority.
Real Madrid are understood to be willing to sell the French defender, 27, with Manchester United reported frontrunners to sign him.
But John Barnes believes Liverpool should be in for Varane, arguing he’d be a more important signing than Mbappe or Haaland, who have been linked with an Anfield move.
“Varane would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool. He’s quick, he’s a good defender and great on the ball so he would suit the way that Liverpool play and for Liverpool to sign him would be a fantastic piece of business,” Barnes told Bonus Code Bets.
“He would strengthen any team in the Premier League but if he is leaving Real Madrid then there will be a lot of teams interested and a lot of competition to sign him.
“Mbappe and Haaland are the answer to Liverpool’s problems, but they would also be great for Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and every top team in Europe.
“Attacking players are not Liverpool’s immediate priority because they have Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, who are fantastic players and the club are among the top scorers in the league while playing brilliant attacking football.”
But Barnes doesn’t want Liverpool to lose sight of their rumoured interest in the Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund stars, insisting they’d be great long-term investments.
He added: “However looking at the age of the top three, in the long term they need to be replaced, but for the immediate future, Mbappe and Haaland aren’t players that could come unless things change with one of the front three going.
“Liverpool are able to attract the best players, it is just a question about whether they can financially compete with teams like PSG and Manchester City.
“Liverpool have always had prestige but now the ambition and direction of where the club is going means they don’t have an issue attracting big-name superstar players at all.”
