Liverpool should look to strengthen in the summer, particularly in attack, club legend John Barnes has suggested.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are struggling in their attempts to retain their Premier League crown and are currently seven points off leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool face a huge task to successfully defend their title

They’ve had bad luck with injuries in defence all season but it’s issues at the other end of the pitch which have posed a bigger problem lately.

A 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton marked the third straight home match without a goal for Liverpool, something they last did in 1984.

The front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have served the club incredibly well in recent seasons and Salah is currently the Premier League’s top scorer this season with 15 goals.

However, they’ve looked stale at points this term and Barnes believes the summer could be a chance to freshen up Liverpool’s forward line.

They’ve previously been linked with Jadon Sancho, however, it’s understood Manchester United are more likely to sign the England international.

Sancho’s Borussia Dortmund teammate Erling Haaland has also been linked with a move away from the German side, while World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe, who was tipped to join Liverpool last summer, looks to be edging closer to leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

Barnes would love any of those three to sign for his former club but warned there may have to be departures from Anfield if any of these moves were to happen.

He told Bonus Code Bets: “Jadon Sancho can fit into that front three, but so can Haaland and so can lots of other players.

It’s understood Mbappe has the choice of signing for either Liverpool or Real Madrid

“If the front three are still there and if Diogo Jota and Divock Origi stay, I don’t think Liverpool will make a signing. If Liverpool could get a top player, like Sancho, Mbappe or Haaland, they’ll face competition from most other teams.

“With the age that they are, Liverpool need to look to strengthen, but they have three or four years left in them. Whether they stay at Liverpool is hard for anyone to say because of the nature of football.”
