Former Arsenal player Perry Groves has issued a warning to Liverpool about signing Shkodran Mustafi.

The 28-year-old centre-back has been linked with a move to Anfield before the January transfer window shuts on Monday as the Reds look for emergency cover at centre-back.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for the foreseeable future, further injuries to Fabinho and Joel Matip this week have forced Liverpool into the market.

West Ham’s Issa Diop, New York Red Bulls’ Aaron Long and Preston’s Ben Davies are among those linked, while Mustafi also fits the club’s requirements.

Jurgen Klopp is looking for a short-term solution and the Germany international could be available for free if Arsenal decide to rip up his contract – which only has six months left to run.

However, five years on from his £35million move from Valencia to Arsenal, doubts remain over Mustafi’s quality.

The centre-back has made a number of high-profile mistakes during his time at the Emirates and Mikel Arteta has used him just three times in the Premier League this season.

And Groves, who made more than 150 appearances for Arsenal, insists Mustafi would be a bad idea for Liverpool.

“I wouldn’t be taking Mustafi, because I’ve seen him play for Arsenal!” Groves told talkSPORT.

“He’s always got a mistake in him. He loses concentration.

“Even in the ginger brotherhood, I can’t back him!

“If you’re bringing someone in, they’ve got to be as good or better than what you’ve got – and I don’t think Mustafi is.”
