Liverpool’s Champions League clash against RB Leipzig later this month will NOT take place in Germany.
The Premier League side were due to play the first leg of their last-16 clash at Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena on February 16.
However, that’s been put out of the question with Sky Sports reporting the German government will not make any exemptions on their ban allowing people into the country who live in nations affected by coronavirus, which came into force last Saturday.
UEFA are now in discussions with the DFB (German FA) and German government about a solution.
While nothing has been confirmed at this stage, the idea of switching the first leg to Liverpool‘s home Anfield is understood to be on the table. The tie could be reduced to one game too.
Liverpool, who have won the competition six times, qualified as group winners with a game to spare where they faced Ajax, FC Midtjylland and Atalanta.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been inconsistent since their last European outing in December, having lost their place at the top of the Premier League.
They’re now seven points behind leaders Manchester City, who have played a game less than the English champions.
An FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United means the Champions League represents Liverpool’s best chance of silverware this term.
