VAR controversy fell in favour of Man City on Tuesday night, benefitting them for the second goal in their emphatic 5-0 triumph at West Brom.

On the whole it was a dominant display from the Citizens who were four up at half-time, but questions were asked about Joao Cancelo’s strike.

Cancelo’s goal was controversial

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring after just six minutes when he collected Cancelo’s searching pass and curled a brilliant strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

It came after Phil Foden had already hit the post for City.

Cancelo doubled City’s lead after 20 minutes when he curled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.

It needed a lengthy VAR check to give the goal after Bernardo Silva was initially flagged offside in the build up.

Assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis raised her flag while play was still going – possibly because she believed the chance had faded away with Silva drawn out wide.

However, the Portuguse international picked out Cancelo who then subsequently found the net.

During this time, some West Brom defenders stopped after seeing the raised flag, though referee Chris Kavanagh never blew his whistle.

As a result, the goal was given when VAR found Silva was not offside to begin with.

Gundogan made it 3-0 after half an hour when he robbed Romaine Sawyers on the edge of the area to fire in his second of the night.

It was 4-0 in first-half injury time when Raheem Sterling teed up Riyad Mahrez to score.

Mahrez and Sterling combined again after 57 minutes to make it 5-0 when the England forward tapped in his ninth goal of the season.

Thankfully for West Brom, there was no further embarrassment.

The result put Manchester City top of the Premier League while West Brom stayed 19th.
