Gabriel Jesus’ clumsiness led to Fernandes’ opener from the penalty spot

The Citizens got off to the worst possible start when Gabriel Jesus, the two-goal hero in the 4-1 midweek win over Wolves, clumsily gave away a penalty when he fouled Anthony Martial in the first minute.

Fernandes, who had been criticised for failing to deliver against the ‘big six’ Premier League clubs, stepped up from the spot to score his 23rd goal of the season.

United doubled their lead five minutes into the second-half when Shaw finished off a fine counter-attacking move in front of an onlooking England boss Gareth Southgate.

Ilkay Gundogan had two half chances that failed to trouble Dean Henderson, who was filling in for David de Gea as the United No.1 became a father on Friday.

City were unlucky not to be level in the early stages of the second-half when Rodri’s fierce shot struck the crossbar.

And the hosts were made to pay for that miss as United doubled their lead in the 50th minute through Shaw.

The left-back broke and finished off a fine counter-attacking move with a shot that left Ederson rooted to the spot.

It was Shaw’s first goal since August 2018, which would have impressed an onlooking England boss Gareth Southgate at the Etihad.

The Three Lions play San Marino, Albania and Poland later this month and Shaw will fancy his chances of making Southgate’s squad.

With Man City failing to trouble United’s defence, Martial had a golden chance to put his side 3-0 up when the ball broke kindly to him in the box, but he was denied by Ederson.

It was not Raheem Sterling or Man City’s day

Phil Foden was introduced in the 70th minute and almost made an immediate impact.

The England midfielder superbly controlled Kevin De Bruyne’s cross, however, he sliced his effort wide.

Raheem Sterling, who is yet to score against United, missed a sitter late on as City suffered a first defeat since they were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham on November 21.
