Adnan Januzaj was once a young star at Manchester United who took Ryan Giggs’ shirt number and Paul Scholes admitted he ‘never understood’ why things didn’t work out for him at Old Trafford.

The midfielder lined-up against his old side for Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday night and showed flashes of why he was so highly rated at the Theatre of Dreams.

Januzaj was signed as a 16-year-old from Anderlecht back in 2011 before being promoted to Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team squad the following year.

His competitive debut did not come until David Moyes was manager in the 2013/14 season but he struggled to nail down a regular starting place.

He was even given the number 11 shirt, available after Giggs retired, such was their view of his talents – but United were never able to get the best out of him.

Januzaj had loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and then Sunderland before joining La Real in 2017.

The 26-year-old has flourished at the Spanish club and impressed against his former side.

“He’s been brilliant tonight,” Paul Scholes told BT Sport. “I never understood why it didn’t work out for him because he had such talent, but it didn’t.

“He’s gone on to good things and tonight he’s been excellent.

“I knew this kid had ability and he’s showing it.”

Januzaj left Old Trafford having played 63 games, scoring five times.

At Sociedad, the midfielder has made 104 appearance with 16 goals to his name. He couldn’t stop his side from going out of the Europa League, though, as they lost 4-0 on aggregate to United.

The second leg at Old Trafford ended in a 0-0 bore draw but the damage had been done from the previous tie.
