There are 161 league places between eighth tier Marine and Premier League giants Tottenham – the largest gap ever in FA Cup history.

In normal circumstances, the club’s ground would be packed out but amid the coronavirus pandemic the match was forced to be held behind closed doors.

But that did not stop fans turning out to welcome the players on their arrival to the Rossett Park Stadium.

Pictures showed many people lining the streets to cheer on the Marine players and the Premier League stars.

Jose Mourinho picked a strong side with Toby Alderweireld, Lucas Moura, Moussa Sissoko and Carlos Vinicius among those starting.

Gareth Bale was on the bench with Son Heung-min and Tanguy Ndombele, but Harry Kane did not travel.

Thankfully, all of Marine’s players and staff came through two rounds of Covid-19 tests unscathed for the eighth-tier club’s biggest game in their history.

The club sold virtual tickets for the game as no supporters were allowed in the stadium.

One hour before kick-off, Marine posted on Twitter that they had sold a remarkable 23,000 at £10 a piece.

Marine captain Niall Cummins was disappointed that Spurs boss Mourinho was taking the match seriously and put a strong team out for the game.

Earlier this week, he told talkSPORT: “I was really hoping Jose Mourinho would show the Cup no respect.

“You want to play against the kids, you don’t want to play against all these top players!

“It’ll be brilliant for the club to see all these top players, whether they’re on the side or on the pitch, it’ll be a great experience. But it won’t help us if they bring all the big guns!”
