Paris Saint-Germain have announced the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager on a contract until June 2022.

The Argentine succeeds Thomas Tuchel, ending his wait to return to the game over a year after leaving Tottenham.

Tuchel guided PSG to successive Ligue 1 titles and won a domestic quadruple in his second season, as well as reaching the Champions League final for the first time in the club’s history.

But their failure to become European champions – losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich – and PSG’s current placking place in third in the Ligue 1 table led to a detailed review of the club.

That resulted in the German coach being axed on December 29, with Pochettino having already been lined up to replace him.

There has been plenty of speculation over Pochettino’s future since he was sacked Spurs after five years in charge.

Now he has been tasked with leading PSG back to the French top flight’s summit and guiding them to glory in Europe, with the Parisiens set to face Barcelona in the last 16 of this season’s Champions League.

Pochettino spent two years playing in Paris at the start of the century, making nearly 95 appearances and winning the 2001 Intertoto Cup.

Pochettino, who has also managed Espanyol and Southampton, said: “I am really happy and honoured to become the new coach of Paris St Germain.

“As you know, this club has always held a special place in my heart. I have wonderful memories, especially of the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes.

“I return to the club today with a lot of ambition and humility, and am eager to work with some of the world’s most talented players.”

PSG chairman and chief executive Nasser Al-Khelaifi said on the club’s official website: “The return of Mauricio fits perfectly with our ambitions and it will be another exciting chapter for the club and one I am positive the fans will enjoy.

“With the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, Paris St Germain are committed to continue to build and move the club forward over the coming years.”
