Mesut Ozil insists he does not regret his decision to move to Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013, despite being frozen out of the current squad.

The 31-year-old moved to the Emirates on deadline day seven-and-a-half years ago to allow Gareth Bale to move to Spain, endearing Ozil to Gunners fans instantly.

After a bright start to his career and even an FA Cup win in his first season, the departure of Arsene Wenger in 2018 following his decision to sign a lucrative contract signalled the beginning of the end.

The arrival of Unai Emery prompted a fall out but Mikel Arteta restoring the German to the team when he arrived. However, this did not last long as he was soon out of the squad again.

Ozil then found himself frozen out of the Gunners’ 25-man squad for the Premier League and, with his contract expiring in the summer, a move to Fenerbahce seems imminent.

During a Q&A session with fans on Twitter, the former club-record signing insists he never regretted moving to the north London side.

He said: “Of course – there have been many ups and downs so far, but all in all I’ve never regretted my decision to join Arsenal.

“And to be honest the last couple of games before the corona break in February & March 2020 made really a lot fun.

“I’ve enjoyed that time a lot and I’ve thought we’re really on a very positive way.

“But after the break things unfortunately changed.”
