Morecambe paid tribute during their FA Cup clash with Chelsea to one of their players who died last year.
The League Two club travelled to Stamford Bridge for the big third round clash and came unstuck with a 4-0 defeat against a strong Blues team.
It was an important day for the club and they paid special tribute to Christian Mbulu, who died in May 2020 aged just 23.
The Morecambe captain Sam Lavelle posted on Twitter before the game that he was devastated to miss out on the match after testing positive for coronavirus.
He explained that there was a special tribute to Mbulu planned.
Lavelle wrote: “Devastated to say I tested positive for Covid last week. The first game I’ve missed since the opening day so to say I’m gutted is an understatement.
“Missing one of the biggest occasions in the clubs history is a real blow.
“I also had something planned in memory of Christian Mbulu for the cameras when walking out the tunnel, which I’m gutted about.
“But these things happen and at least I can concentrate on the league now. Can’t wait to watch as a fan today and I hope they make the most of a huge match. All the best fellas.”
The club still paid tribute to Mbulu in Lavelle’s absence with a framed photograph of the defender on their bench.
It was not to be for the League Two club on the pitch, though, with Mason Mount scoring from distance on his 22nd birthday to put Chelsea 1-0 up.
Forward Timo Werner finally managed to end his drought on the cusp of half-time, tapping in to put Chelsea 2-0 up.
Callum Hudson-Odoi added a third for the Blues shortly after half-time, slotting home after latching onto ball over the Morecambe defence.
Kai Havertz also got on the scoresheet with four minutes remaining, heading home Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross to make it 4-0.
