Arsenal has signed Nuno Tavares from Benfica for £7m ($9.7m) The 21-year-old defender becomes the Gunners’ first signing of the summer. He is currently in quarantine to comply with UK government coronavirus regulations.

Arsenal has signed Benfica defender Nuno Tavares on a season-long loan deal. The-year-old says he is “so excited” to be joining the Gunners after his agent told him they were interested in him. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says Tavares’ arrival will give the club extra strength and options in defense.

WHO IS NUNO TAVARES?

Benfica midfielder Nuno Tavares has signed a new contract with the Portuguese giants. The 19-year-old joined Benfica’s academy in 2015, making his debut for the B team three years later. He broke into the senior side at the start of the 2019-20 season and went on to make 41 senior appearances in all competitions. Tavares also represented Portugal at U18, U19 and U21 level.

WHERE WILL TAVARES FIT INTO THE ARSENAL SQUAD?

The defender will be deployed as a back-up to first-choice Kieran Tierney at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners lacked a natural replacement for the Scotland international last season, which saw Granit Xhaka play in that position during the final stages of the campaign.
