Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t ruled out the possibility of extending Edinson Cavani’s contract with Manchester United, adding that the forward has ‘a few years left in him’.

The Uruguayan has made an instant impact at Old Trafford since signing on deadline day, notching three goals and two assists in his eight league appearances for the club – including an impressive double away at Southampton as United secured another comeback win.

Despite his current deal being set to expire next summer, the Red Devils have the option to extend the 33-year-old’s stay with the club by a further year, and Solskjaer has hinted that they could be set to trigger the clause.

“At the moment, it looks like he has a few years left in him,” Solskjaer said as reported by the MEN. “So I wouldn’t say anything else. He has made a great impact when he has come here. Let’s focus on improving everyone but he has a few years left in him.

“He is definitely a starter. You don’t classify a player of that quality as anything else. We have plenty of starters, more than 11.

“That is the thing when you are at Man Utd. You should believe and trust in yourself. I trust him. We have good competition for places. He will probably start more games than he will not start.”

Upon his arrival at the club, Cavani was instantly handed the number seven shirt, a squad number synonymous with past greats such as George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Many players have buckled under the pressure of being handed the famous jersey, though Solskjaer added the former PSG man was desperate for the shirt number and that he was sure he could handle the pressure it brings.

“That was the first thing he asked me, if he could wear the number seven,” Solskjaer added. “Obviously we are talking about the history of the shirt.

“When you think of the history of his career and the experience he has had, his personality from the chat I had with him and when I watched him before, I wasn’t in doubt that he could handle the number seven shirt.

“He is so meticulous and professional. His habits and everything about him show why he has had the career he has. Even at the age he is now he is one of the fittest players we have got.”
