Manchester United went top of the Premier League with a 1-0 victory at Burnley on Tuesday night – thanks largely to Paul Pogba.

The Red Devils leapfrogged Liverpool, climbing above their rivals for the first time since the start of last season, as Pogba’s volley put them three-points clear at the top.

If there was a hint of luck about the goal, which deflected off Matthew Lowton and threw the legs of Nick Pope, then Pogba earned it with a fabulous display.

The Frenchman, who found himself out of the starting XI and linked with a move away not too long ago, was described as the ‘best player on the pitch’ by one of his fiercest critics Gary Neville.

Not even Man City, with their two games in hand, can go level with United on points after 17 matches this season – and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men must surely be considered title contenders now.

If not, their credentials will face the ultimate test when they face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

United were good value for the win – but it was far from easy

Until Pogba broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, it had looked like VAR was going to steal the headlines at Turf Moor following a lengthy four minute delay in the first-half and then a disallowed goal.

All of a sudden, referee Kevin Friend was looking at a potential red card for both Robbie Brady and Luke Shaw as a review for handball by the Burnley defender ended up inspecting a dodgy tackle from the Manchester United left-back in the build-up.

In the end, the yellow for Brady was rescinded due to the challenge by Shaw, Burnley were given a free-kick, and the United defender’s punishment was yellow.

That wasn’t the end of it, though. Moments later, Harry Maguire thought he gave his side the lead with a towering header, only for it to be ruled out for a push on Erik Pieters.

If United didn’t go on to win, that would’ve caused some serious controversy, but instead all discussions will be about whether Red Devils really can win the Premier League this season.
