Neville is to leave his job with England in July at the conclusion of his contract, with Holland boss Sarina Wiegman to become his replacement.

It is understood preliminary discussions between Neville and Inter Miami have now taken place over the 43-year-old taking charge of the MLS club.

Beckham and Neville are close friends, having come through the Manchester United academy together and enjoyed huge success in a dominant Red Devils side under Sir Alex Ferguson.

They are co-owners of League Two club Salford City, along with Neville’s elder brother Gary and fellow former United stars Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Miami enjoyed a disappointing debut season in the MLS, finishing tenth in the 14-team Eastern Conference last season.

They then finished bottom of their ‘MLS is back’ group, a new format introduced after football was put on hold by the coronavirus pandemic.

Under Alonso, they won just just seven of their 23 matches, losing 13 times, with the Uruguayan’s tenure coming to an end on Thursday.

On his departure, Alonso said: “Going through the journey of this inaugural season with Inter Miami has been an incredible experience, and I am thankful to the ownership group for the opportunity.

“I want to thank the staff for their work and friendship, the players for their efforts on the field, and especially the fans for their constant support throughout the year. I wish everyone the best this upcoming season.”

Neville has been in charge of England’s women’s side since January 2018.

He led the Lionesses to fourth-place finish at the World Cup in 2019 but has faced criticism for their form and performances since then, with seven defeats in their last 11 games.
