In Munich on Saturday, Germany defeated Portugal 4-2 despite going behind to Cristiano Ronaldo’s first goal in their UEFA Euro 2020 campaign.

Portugal 2-4 Germany
Goals: 1-0 Ronaldo (15′), 1-1 Dias o.g. (35′), 1-2 Guerreiro o.g. (39′) 1-3 Havertz (51′), 1-4 Gosens (60′), 2-4 Jota (67′)

German started well, and Robin Gosens was offside, but lost the ball to Ronaldo after only 15 minutes as he finished off a clinical counterattack. Portuguese forward Joao Moutinho scored his first career goal against Germany, and it was one of the easiest of his career. the Germans responded brilliantly in the first half, in five minutes to turn the game around. Ruben Dias turned in a free kick from Gosens to tie the game for Germany as he converted a fierce cross from the excellent German midfielder. In the second half, Raphael Guerreiro of Borussia Dortmund also put a shot into his own net to give Joachim Löw’s side the lead.

Gosens again played a major role as they extended their lead less than quarter of an hour after the break. Kai Havertz taps in another goal off the left-back as Germany gain a two-goal lead. Gosens turned two goals into three, as Joshua Kimmich found him at the back post and set him up to score at the far post. In the second half, Diego Jota scored a second goal for Portugal, but Germany remained in control as they put their first three points on the board in Group F, leapfrogging the holders into second place with one match remaining.

After that first match defeat by France, this victory is extremely important. With a first-half win over Hungary, Germany moved into second position in Group F, ahead of Portugal. Portugal, defending champions, will face world champions France in their final game of the group. Still a lot at stake in the ‘Group of Death’.
