A furious Sam Allardyce accused the West Brom players of lacking dedication and not pulling their weight after being torn apart by Leeds on Tuesday night.
The Baggies were humbled 5-0 by Marcelo Bielsa’s side at the Hawthorns – conceding four in a crazy first half.
A comical Romaine Sawyers own goal, plus goals from Ezgjan Alioski, Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Raphinha capped off a truly disastrous performance by the relegation-threatened West Brom.
But it wasn’t the margin of defeat that hurt Allardyce the most. The newly-appointed West Brom boss was left despondent by the application of his players.
He said: “I expect us to overcome that disappointment. It’s a huge blow when you see something like that happen – particularly with the position we are in (second-bottom).
“The lads think ‘oh no what’s next, what can happen now’? You have to dismiss it from your mind and have more fight and determination.
“You have to play your way back into the game and we failed to do that at every level. We let Leeds overrun us and didn’t show any of the fight, determination and quality defending we showed at Liverpool.
“What the players have to realise is, whatever they think they are at this moment is not enough.
“I said on day one they had to individually work harder, not only at the club but look after themselves better away from the club. I’m yet to see that, whether they have dedicated themselves more.
“Tonight put a lot of doubt in my mind about their dedication. Leeds didn’t only play us off the field, they ran us off the field.”
West Brom earned a surprise draw at Premier League champions Liverpool just two days before being humbled by Leeds.
Allardyce also suggested his players got complacent after claiming a point at Anfield.
He told talkSPORT: “It shows that inconsistency is an understatement. You find at this level that consistency is part of winning football matches.
“That’s failed us tonight. We thought we were getting somewhere with what happened at Liverpool and we have to bare in mind that we’re a struggling side at the wrong end of the Premier League.
“The players we’re playing against are better than we are and we have to compete against that and the only way you can compete against that is by being able to play as a team together and to be able to maximise our strengths and nullify their weaknesses and that can be done if everyone pulls their weight. Everyone pulled their weight at Liverpool but not tonight.
“But I have to give credit to Leeds. They’re a super side which not only shows how far behind we are in football terms, technical terms but also fitness terms.
“I don’t want to see anything like that again, I don’t want to see a performance like that. I can accept a defeat but I can’t accept the way we got defeated today.”
