Manchester City’s record goalscorer Sergio Aguero will leave the club this summer as he won’t be getting a new contract.
This is the view of European football expert Lars Sivertsen, who suggested that the four-time Premier League champions will feel it’s better to let the 32-year-old striker go.
Aguero arrived at Man City in the summer of 2011 and has been a key contributor towards their success since, most notably scoring that goal against QPR in the final moments of the 2011/12 season which gave City their first Premier League crown.
As well as helping City win a bunch of other trophies, Aguero wrote himself further into club history by becoming their record goalscorer in November 2017. He currently has 256 Man City goals to his name.
This achievement is made all the more outstanding by the fact he’s had his fair share of injuries during his time at the Etihad Stadium.
It’s been no different for the Argentina international, having sustained a hamstring injury in October on his first appearance for City since returning from an 18-match absence.
Pep Guardiola revealed Aguero played no part in City’s FA Cup triumph over Birmingham at the weekend due to being in contact with someone who later tested positive for coronavirus.
Aguero’s contract at the Etihad expires in June and Sivertsen believes these niggly injuries and the fact he’s entering the twilight years of his career will see him leave after ten years of service.
Sivertsen said on Trans Europe Express: “The problem now is he’s 32 and he keeps getting all these injuries and to what extent he can keep contributing as much as what Guardiola needs from a centre forward in his system to contribute I’m very, very uncertain about.
“So you’re then faced with the proposition of having to offer him a pretty substantial contract because I think he’s earned the right to demand one.
“Maybe they’ll think the better thing might be to let him go. It seems an absurd thing to say about a finisher like that who still on his day is one of the most lethal box finishers in the world.”
Sivertsen also compared Aguero’s situation to that of Luis Suarez, who left Barcelona last summer after six years at the LaLiga giants.
The 33-year-old joined Atletico Madrid, who are considered a rival of Barca, but Sivertsen believes the Camp Nou top brass don’t regret letting him leave.
He added: “Aguero’s 32, Ibra [Zlatan Ibrahimovic] is 39 but it might be one of those Suarez situations where I think Barcelona feel they did the right thing in letting Suarez go even if he’s playing really rather well for a rival now.”
