Simon Jordan believes Atletico Madrid may regret signing ‘ghastly little wretch’ Kieran Trippier after becoming embroiled in his ban for breaching betting rules.
The England full-back has been hit with a ten-week suspension and £70,000 fine for telling a friend about his impending move to Spain from Tottenham in 2019 and encouraging him to bet on the deal going through.
Trippier was initially suspended by the Football Association in December, but the ban was then provisionally lifted in January after Atletico lodged an appeal – the Spanish club claiming the English FA could not suspend a player who is not active in their league.
But their appeal was thrown out by FIFA, who ruled that ‘sanctions imposed on the player by the English FA to have worldwide effect’, with Atleti now taking the case up with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
It means, for now at least, the England international – a vital player in Atletico’s first XI – will miss the club’s next nine games.
That includes the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie against Chelsea, as well as crucial league games as Atleti, who are top of the LaLiga table, fight for their first Spanish title since 2014.
The incident has split public opinion, with many coming to Trippier’s defence over the severity of the ban, but Jordan insists the punishment is not enough and says Trippier should also be prevented from playing in the delayed European Championship later this year.
The talkSPORT pundit branded the 30-year-old a ‘disgrace’ for dragging his club into this mess and ‘making them a laughing stock’.
“I feel very sorry for Atletico Madrid because they have inherited this situation – all they have done is sign a player,” the former Crystal Palace owner told Jim White.
“They’re the victims here.
“They’ve signed a player for a decent amount of money, they’re probably paying this ghastly individual a bunch of money on a weekly basis and they get the added issue of losing him from being able to play.
“Having seen the transcript of the WhatsApp messages, he is as guilty as guilty can be. I think it’s disgraceful, he knows precisely what he’s done and the length of his ban is probably lenient.
“What there should be is a kick of the can so it affects the players at the worst possible time – out of the Euros.
“But Atletico are in a conflicting situation; they want the player now, they want him to play in these big games, their season is being defined at this moment in time and he’s a key component in their team.
“The ghastly little wretch should get his head handed to him, he’s a disgrace, he’s put his club in a situation where they are made to look like they’re playing the system by appealing his ban while that slob has done what he’s done.
“I know it’s strong language, but it’s a disgrace!
“These footballers sometimes… why would you do such a thing? I’ll tell you why, because as with so many other things, the life we all live in does not apply to them.
“He’s bringing the game into disrepute, he’s making his club a laughing stock, he’s making the rules and process of going to CAS a ridiculous scenario, all because of his actions!
