Southampton’s Twitter account gave up on tweeting goal updates during their 9-0 defeat to Manchester United on Tuesday night.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s sorry Saints were hammered by the same scoreline as their 2019 humiliation at home to Leicester – a record equalling feat.

Nine-man Southampton were hammered by United

Having seen full debutant Alexandre Jankewitz sent off within two minutes of kick-off for a terrible challenge on Scott McTominay, it was always going to be a tough evening for Saints.

They were 4-0 down at half-time with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani finding the net, alongside a Jan Bednarek own goal.

A further five goals came after the break as the Red Devils ran rampant.

Anthony Martial got two, while Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James added the others.

Bednarek’s red (when the score was 6-0) saw the Saints finish with nine men.

In the end it was nine goals, but seven was all Southampton’s Twitter account could handle.

Their live thread tweeting goal updates listed every United strike up until Fernandes’ penalty.

The admin seemingly had seen enough and decided not to mention Martial’s second (to make it eight) or James’ last-gasp tap-in (which made it nine).

The next tweet after the 7-0 goal update was the 9-0 full-time screen.
