Virgil van Dijk has released a video on Instagram showcasing his progress in the recovery from his serious knee injury.

Van Dijk damaged his cruciate ligament in the Merseyside derby in October and it was initially feared he would miss the majority of the season.

But the video posted on Monday – just seven weeks after surgery – offers hope of a quicker recovery than expected.

The video is captioned ‘step by step’ and in it Van Dijk is working with the ball, as well as doing weights and using resistance bands.

Despite losing their talismanic defender, Liverpool sit top of the Premier League after 14 games, and Van Dijk is still reportedly having a big impact in the dressing room.

After the 4-0 victory over Wolves, Georginio Wijdnaldum revealed his compatriot made a special request for him to score, which he delivered on.

“I already said that every goal I score this year I will dedicate to him because we all miss him,” Wijnaldum told Liverpoolfc.com.

“It was great to have him back. He said to me in the dressing room, ‘I want to see something today, I want a goal’ so I said: ‘No problem!””
