The Reds were firm favourites to defend their crown during the early stages of the campaign, and still appeared in a good place when they butchered Crystal Palace 7-0 on December 19.

But Klopp’s side haven’t won a league game since, and now sit fourth after suffering their first league defeat at Anfield in almost four years this week, with Burnley’s 1-0 win ending the Merseysiders’ run of 68 games unbeaten at home.

Now five league games without victory, the champions could be as low as SEVENTH by the time they next play in the league, away at Tottenham on Thursday.

It appears the wheels have come off their bid to win two straight titles – although who knows what will happen next in this chaotic season – and groans around Anfield have grown in recent weeks, with a Liverpool fan joining talkSPORT calling for the manager to be sacked.

Jason Cundy says Liverpool are at the end of a cycle and must freshen up team to keep winning – like Fergie did at Man United

And there’s certainly one appointment that will have supporters foaming at the mouth – with Anfield icon Gerrard now the bookmaker’s favourite to return to his boyhood club as Liverpool’s next permanent boss.

The shift in odds comes after Gerrard marked his 150th game as Rangers manager with a resounding 5-0 win over Ross County.

The Glasgow giants turned on the style as they celebrated their manager’s landmark match with a relentless display to go 23 points clear of Celtic at the summit.

Rangers look certain to end the club’s long wait to be champions, and end their Old Firm rivals’ hopes of winning ten-in-a-row, with only nine more points required to crown his side champions.

Gerrard now has 98 victories under his belt as Rangers boss, and he is the firm 10/11 favourite to succeed Klopp in the Anfield dugout, with pressure piling on the German.

Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammate Xabi Alonso is second favourite for the post. The Spaniard is currently in charge of Real Sociedad’s B team, while Klopp’s assistant Pepijn Lijnders is also in contention.
