Spain beat Switzerland 3-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2020 quarter-final. Mikel Oyarzabal struck the winning penalty after Ruben Vargas fired over the bar. Spain had earlier taken an early lead when Jordi Alba’s shot from outside the box was deflected into his own net.
Not surprisingly given their numerical advantage, Spain dominated extra time and created a host of chances as Switzerland played for penalties, perhaps mindful that their opponents had missed their last five spot-kicks, including two against them in a Nations League game in November.
Either Italy or Belgium will await Spain in the first semi-final at Wembley on Tuesday night.
