There’s no time like the present as far as Chelsea are concerned with the club set to appoint Thomas Tuchel as their new manager.

Tuchel’s projected appointment is set to come after Frank Lampard was relieved of his duties on Monday.

Lampard leaves the job following a bad run of results which has seen Chelsea slip to ninth in the Premier League table, 11 points behind leaders Manchester United.

talkSPORT understands Tuchel will take the Stamford Bridge reins but whether he’s the right man for the job has divided opinion.

Simon Jordan is surprised to see Chelsea give Lampard the chop after 18 months in the post but says former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund boss Tuchel is a ‘decent’ replacement.

However, the club’s top brass may not have an easy ride with him at the helm.

Jordan said on talkSPORT: “To have a 75 per cent win record in any league is commendable, and when you look at his Bundesliga spell for him to get 63 per cent… Ferguson never had 63 per cent, Mourinho’s never had 63 per cent.

Jamie O’Hara criticises Kai Havertz who ‘looks like an academy player’ and says Roman Abramovich needs to decide if Frank Lampard is the right man to take Chelsea forward

“To get 63 per cent in an elite league like the Bundesliga, this guy is clearly a decent manager.

“The interesting thing is he fell out with PSG over transfer policies; it’s difficult to imagine how you can possibly fall out with a regime that spends £200million on footballers.

“Maybe they should be careful what they wish for, Chelsea, because now they’ve got the counter-balance to what Abramovich is.

“Chelsea fans should actually be quite enthused, because if he’s got the balls to call out PSG’s ownership, he’ll do the same at Chelsea.”

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano used the example of Tuchel’s experience with top players such as Kylian Mbappe and Neymar to suggest he can get the best out of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who have struggled to settle in after Chelsea spent big on them last summer.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Romano added how Tuchel’s German nationality will also help the out-of-form duo.

However, Danny Murphy is sceptical of Tuchel, suggesting he doesn’t fit the usual Chelsea mould of hiring managers who bring guaranteed success.

“I know his win percentage is high but he only won a cup in Germany,” Murphy told Jim White.

“And with all due respect Jim, you’d probably win the league managing PSG.

“It’s not as if they’re bringing someone in who can guarantee success, far from it, which makes it even more silly for me.

“Although he’s done all right at PSG and got them to a Champions League final, he’s not Pep Guardiola and he’s not Jurgen Klopp.”
