Thomas Tuchel admitted his Chelsea forwards could have been more clinical against Burnley, but believes the Stamford Bridge pitch was just as much of a hindrance.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso showed up their misfiring attacking teammates as the Blues defenders netted fine strikes in a 2-0 win to secure Tuchel’s first win in charge.

Azpilicueta’s first goal in a year had the profligate Blues in charge at the break, before Alonso toasted his first Chelsea appearance since last September with a smart finish at the death.

The Blues moved up to seventh in the table courtesy of just a third win in ten league matches, with Tuchel tasked with launching another new era after Frank Lampard’s sacking.

After a rather dour draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the German was impressed with what he saw on Sunday afternoon.

“I’m very satisfied again,” he told talkSPORT. “We needed to be very strong physically; we needed to be very disciplined and very well organised.

“We needed to defend the long balls, the second balls, you need a lot of attention for the balls falling down and they play in your back three.

“So the back three and the six were fantastic mentally and physically, they guys on the side were very, very aware and the three guys up front were always aware and hard working.

“It was always a team effort; we never lost the distances, we never lost the energy and the quality against the ball.

“We allowed only one shot in the very last minute – I’m very pleased with that – at the same time we never lost patience, we created a lot of chances, a lot of half-chances and deliveries.

“But, in general, it was a well-deserved win and a good performance.”

Tuchel is the first Chelsea manager to keep a clean sheet in each of his first two Premier League games in charge since Rafael Benitez in 2012.

However, despite the resolute nature of his back five, the former Paris Saint-Germain boss admitted his side should have scored more against the Clarets after having eight shots on target.

But Tuchel also believes the Stamford Bridge pitch played a part in his side’s woes in front of goal.

He added: “I can say this very easy, I never scored in my life as a semi-professional or a professional! So this is the hardest thing to do.

“The pitch does not help honestly – it’s not in top condition so it is hard.

“But at the same time, we have to admit we lacked precision; we lacked precision in the last ball and we lacked precision in the deliveries and in the finishing.

“But it’s okay, we will work on it and hopefully improve.”
