Mesut Ozil’s next career moves to either Turkey or America have been thrown into doubt, with claims no Super Lig or Major League Soccer clubs could afford to sign the Arsenal outcast.
Ozil’s spell in north London is drawing to a close after a rollercoaster seven-and-a-half years in north London.
The 32-year-old is reportedly set for an imminent move to Super Lig giants Fenerbahce, while he has also been strongly linked with a switch to Major League Soccer with several clubs – including Wayne Rooney’s old team DC United – said to be interested.
He even admitted his dreams were to play in one of the countries and called Fenerbahce the ‘Real Madrid of Turkey’.
Whatever happens, Ozil will certainly leave Arsenal in the summer, with his big-money contract expiring at the end of the season.
But these rumoured moves to Turkey and the States have been downplayed by European football experts on talkSPORT, saying the player is just too expensive.
“Fenerbahce can’t afford this, there’s no way they can afford this,” said Andy Brassell on Sunday’s Trans Europe Express.
“It wouldn’t be the first time in recent history that a Turkish Super Lig club made a transfer deal they couldn’t really afford.
“Especially with Arsenal’s unwillingness to pay any of the wages whatsoever, this is way beyond what Fenerbahce were looking at.
“Bringing Mesut Ozil back to Turkey would be a massive deal for any club; a lot of people thought it would be Istanbul Basaksehir, but that doesn’t seem to be on the table at the moment, particular because they are marooned in midtable whereas Fenerbahce are chasing the title.
“To me, the MLS makes a lot better sense.”
But Norwegian journalist Lars Sivertsen insisted that wouldn’t work, either.
“MLS doesn’t pay as much as people in Europe think it does,” he said.
“The highest earners in MLS are on a lot less than what Ozil is on right now; that’s obvious, most people on the planet are.

“But also, I would be surprised if he could get… I think it could be possible for him to get a better contract in Turkey than in MLS.
“Even the designated players in the MLS franchises actually don’t make as much money as people think.”
Arsenal thought they were ensuring the future of one of the world’s best players when they handed Ozil a £350,000-a-week deal back in February 2018, only for the midfielder to lose his mojo and spend his final years in obscurity.
But while the Gunners are desperate to get rid of Ozil in January, the ex-Germany international has been backed to stay and rinse the club for ‘every penny’ of his contract before leaving in the summer.
A lot of hate has been directed Ozil’s way over his stunning wages at the Emirates Stadium but Gabriel Agbonlahor insists it is not his fault, saying ‘nobody forced’ Arsenal to give him such an astronomical salary.
And given the way the club has treated him in recent years, the talkSPORT pundit says the midfielder has every right to get what is owed to him.
“Clubs treat players badly when they don’t want them, let’s not be fooled here,” the former Aston Villa captain said on The Sports Bar Weekender
“Yes, Ozil has done things that he maybe shouldn’t have done and the way he’s acted…
“But no one forced Arsenal to give him £350,000-a-week… take every penny!
“Why should he say, ‘I love Arsenal and I’m going to leave seven or eight million on the table and move because I love the club’?
“No! Why should he?
“When the club don’t want you, they’d be the first to throw you in the Under-23s and make you train on your own.
“So I’m all for players getting what they’re contracted to get. I don’t blame him for sitting there and getting every penny.”
